Dear Subscribers, Throughout the year, it is not uncommon for us to recieve short notes of support and praise for the work we do at LINGUIST. We share those messsages among the crew and you can be sure that we appreciate them immensely. Dick Hudson, a member of the LINGUIST Advisory Board was gracious enough to write this letter for our fund drive, as we know that you would probably enjoy hearing from someone other than a Linguist crew member! We thank Dick, and ALL of you, for your words of support thoughout the year. They keep us going! On another note, your criticism and suggestions are important too. We are linguists before we are programmers, and we need your feedback so that we can correct errors and problems as soon as they appear. Underlyingly, our developing website is as structurally complex as many professional sites, and we appreciate your patience as we it all together. There are many exciting developments just around the corner; we hope you enjoy them and find them useful. Dear Linguist List, For me the Linguist List stands for the IT revolution in linguistics. It was the first discussion group that I joined, and transformed my working life. It remains the 'classic' in the field to which (in my opinion) every linguist should automatically subscribe. It has grown up very fast under the clear-sighted management of the core team, and its main value nowadays is as an information resource (rather than a discussion list) - the natural starting point for any web search in linguistics. But rich web sites don't grow on trees; they cost money; if we want to keep it independent of advertising, we have to pay for it ourselves. I've contributed small amounts in the past, and no doubt I shall continue to do so in the future. A few dollars a year isn't much to pay for this - especially if you think how much we pay for a single book. Dick Hudson Phonetics and Linguistics, University College London, UK http://www.phon.ucl.ac.uk/home/dick/home.htm * As you receive this message, we will be into the fourth day of the fund drive. Thanks to to the individuals and institutions listed below, we have received $7578 towards the $48,000 we will need to support our student editors next year. We would like to say a special thank you to all of you who donate regularly, year after year. Your long-term support has enabled LINGUIST to grow to what it has become today. If you find what we do useful, please support us by going to http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a credit card). Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. Don't forget that in return for a donation of $25 or more, we would like to send you a stylish LINGUIST List T-shirt. Cool in summer, warm in winter, and fashionable in every season, you too can be the envy of your department with your LINGUIST with one of these. To see how good our crew look in them, please visit our premiums page at http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html. We're also offering LINGUIST List tote bags, which are new this year. Please let us know in your pledge which you would like. Remember to let us know your postal address and what size and style you'd like. We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We couldn't do this without you. With our sincere thanks, The LINGUIST Crew: Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael, Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri, John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko. * LINGUIST Contributors ANGELS ($1000 and over) Blackwell Publishers John Benjamins Richard Sproat and Chilin Shih MAINSTAYS ($100 to $1000) Dr Catherine Walter Elizabeth D.
