Dear Subscribers, If you've been following The LINGUIST List Fund Drive, you know that we still need $33,313 to reach our goal of $48,000. In other words, we have received $14,687 from generous persons and organizations like you. As you see from the donor list, our contributors include publishers, who donate in return for our announcing their linguistics publications, as well as various institutions and organizations. But every bit as important are the donations we receive from individual subscribers from all parts of the world. We thought you might find it interesting to see where your fellow subscribers are from, so we have compiled a listing of the 106 countries that are represented in our subscriber list. Currently, our combined lists, LINGUIST and LINGLITE, have 15,662 subscribers, exclusive of those on the 49 redistribution lists, which are considered separate entities. This means that since last year at this time, we have added roughly 2,000 new subscribers. To the new 2,000, we'd like to welcome you to the Linguist List! The country by country breakdown is as follows: * Country Subscribers * ------- ----------- * Albania 1 * Algeria 1 * American Samoa 2 * Argentina 65 * Armenia 1 * Australia 313 * Austria 92 * Bahrain 2 * Belgium 148 * Bolivia 1 * Botswana 3 * Brazil 115 * Brunei Darussalam 5 * Bulgaria 21 * Canada 577 * Chile 8 * China 49 * Cocos (Keeling) Islands 1 * Colombia 6 * Costa Rica 4 * Cote D'Ivoire 2 * Croatia/Hrvatska 36 * Cuba 1 * Cyprus 5 * Czech Republic 28 * Denmark 103 * Ecuador 1 * Egypt 9 * El Salvador 1 * Estonia 16 * Fiji 10 * Finland 179 * France 343 * French Southern Territories 1 * Georgia 1 * Germany 1031 * Great Britain 875 * Greece 80 * Hong Kong 59 * Hungary 69 * Iceland 20 * India 14 * Indonesia 9 * Iran 19 * Ireland 57 * Israel 79 * Italy 176 * Jamaica 6 * Japan 740 * Jordan 4 * Korea 225 * Kuwait 3 * Latvia 1 * Lebanon 2 * Liechtenstein 1 * Lithuania 4 * Luxembourg 9 * Macau 1 * Macedonia, former Yugoslavia Rep. 5 * Malaysia 31 * Malta 2 * Mexico 74 * Micronesia, Federal States of 1 * Moldova, Republic of 1 * Morocco 13 * Namibia 1 * Netherlands 381 * New Zealand 53 * Nigeria 1 * Niue 2 * Norway 145 * Oman 4 * Pakistan 2 * Papua New Guinea 3 * Peru 7 * Philippines 3 * Poland 83 * Portugal 88 * Qatar 2 * Romania 8 * Russian Federation 87 * San Marino 1 * Saudi Arabia 8 * Singapore 47 * Slovakia 8 * Slovenia 8 * South Africa 77 * Soviet Union 7 * Spain 400 * Sweden 172 * Switzerland 128 * Taiwan 168 * Thailand 39 * Trinidad and Tobago 1 * Tunisia 7 * Turkey 84 * USA 7,579 * Ukraine 3 * United Arab Emirates 7 * Uruguay 6 * Venezuela 7 * Viet Nam 7 * Yugoslavia 23 * Zambia 1 * Zimbabwe 1 * Unidentified 58 We are very proud to think that LINGUIST is serving linguists throughout the world. If you are one of these linguists and agree that Linguist List is a useful, even indispensable resource, won't you consider making a donation? Thank you! So if you have not donated yet, please go to http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a credit card). Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier. The address to send cheques is as follows: The LINGUIST Editorial Support Fund c/o Helen Aristar-Dry Dept. of English Eastern Michigan University Ypsilanti, MI USA 48197 As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. Don't forget that in return for a donation of $30, you too can receive an adult-size LINGUIST List T-shirt and and become the envy of your friends and neighbours. To see our highly-paid fashion models* show off the fine attire we have on offer, please visit our premiums page at http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html. We also have baby-sized T-shirts and tote bags for $25. Please let us know in your pledge what you would like and remember to let us know your postal address and what size and style you need. We at LINGUIST really do appreciate your support. We could not continue without you. With our sincere thanks, The LINGUIST Crew: Anthony, Helen, Andrew, Karen, Naomi, Heather, James, Michael, Zhen-Wei, Richard, Karolina, Dina, Renee, Steve, Marie, Gayathri, John, Ljuba, Terry, Simin, Tomoko. * Unfortunately, due to budget constraints, we had to make a last-minute decision to replace the highly-paid models with rather less well paid LINGUIST List editors. Dear subscribers, We thought you'd like to hear from some of the students your funds are supporting. So this year each fund drive issue will include a brief paragraph from one of our editors telling you, their sponsors, about their work with LINGUIST. And now, a few words from James Yuells... I've worked for LINGUIST for almost four years now, first as an undergraduate and now as a grad student in linguistics. What continues to impress me is the intellectual environment that LINGUIST fosters. Whether we are discussing linguistics, programming, or even the fund drive, there is always a lively, varied discussion. In fact, this is probably the only group I know where I could debate linguistics, programming, philosophy, and politics all in the same hour! The crew at LINGUIST is smart, but more importantly they know how to use their intelligence, both to interact constructively and to get things done. They are fun for me to be around; I'm learning a lot; and I also feel that, as part of that crew, I am doing useful work. So I want to thank LINGUIST subscribers for providing the funding which supports this crew, and our efforts.
