This is just out of curiosity, but I'm wondering how many of you there are whose interest in linguistics got a push along by a subscription to the long defunct _Quinto Lingo_, a magazine that published articles in five (sometimes more) languages? _Quinto Lingo_made a big difference in my own life. My father subscribed to it for my sister and me when I was about eight, in an effort to help us keep up and expand our knowledge of German, which he was teaching us at home. In addition to getting exposure to the major European languages, I was intrigued by the subject matter of many of the articles, e.g. the difficulties of translation, kinship terms across languages, languages of the Caucasus. Mario Pei became a household word for me. There were dialogues, fables, jokes, crossword puzzles, recipes. The ads were almost as much fun as the articles: 'He who laughs - learns!! So here they are: Laf 'n' lrn Tapes'; 'Listen to you talk!'; 'You are twice as smart as you think!' A Google search turned up a couple of other linguists who cited the role of _Quinto Lingo_ in their lifelong love affair with language and linguistics: http://accurapid.com/journal/profile.htm http://www.usc.edu/isd/locations/ssh/special/fml/WESS/PINF98.html This isn't for research or anything other than personal interest and curiosity. But did you once subscribe to _Quinto Lingo_? Have you hung onto your copies of the magazine? (I still enjoy rereading mine now and then!) What was your personal experience with _Quinto Lingo_? (Anybody interested in starting it up again???) Write to me, and I'll summarize for the list if there is enough response. Can anyone give me the titles of the most recent / representative books on sociolinguistics and the media? I should like to find representative books on discourse analysis in the media (press, television) written after 1990. I hope you can help me. Kind regards, R.
