All of these from the comfort of our own desks. This is the time to take a moment to reflect on how much it costs to run the LINGUIST list: student editors, web page improvement, server, etc. This is the time to support LINGUIST with donations. We donate to LINGUIST because: LINGUIST is a very important linguistic community. We can't live without it. We know that our donation is supporting a worthy cause, one that directly relates to our academic interest. We know where our money is going. Act now. Support LINGUIST with a donation. As you've just read, however, we cannot run LINGUIST without your financial support. Running a web-based organisation like LINGUIST is very expensive; the cost of software licences, computers, even basic office supplies have to be managed and budgeted. But the most significant running costs are the stipends for the student editors. These stipends are by no means enormous (the international members of our crew, for example, have to show an additional source of income before the US government will issue them visas), but the size of our operation now requires twelve editors, and the stipends add up. While we are not a profit-making organisation (and thus qualifying as a 501(c) institution to receive tax-free contributions), we do not receive any government money for our operational running costs. Therefore, we rely on you for your support, so that we can continue posting issues and maintaining our website. Some people, companies and institutions have already donated, and they are listed at the bottom of this issue. Together, they have donated $31,557 and we are truly grateful to them. This still leaves us with around $16,500 to go, however. So if you have not donated yet, please go to http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to send us your pledge. From there you have the choice of donating straight away by credit card using our secure form, or you can send us a cheque later. If you do send a cheque, please make it payable in US dollars; we get charged about $50 a time to convert currency (no such problems with a credit card). Alternatively, you can hit "Reply" to this message and send us your pledge right now by email, prior to sending your cheque. Then we will be able to list you immediately as one of our donors; and we may be able to reach our goal (and halt these Fund Drive messages) a bit earlier.
