First International Conference on Modern Western Armenian

The Armenian Studies Program and the Department of Linguistics at the
University of Michigan, Ann Arbor, are pleased to announce the seventh
quadrennial International Conference on Armenian Linguistics and the
first annual conference on Modern Western Armenian, to be held jointly
in Ann Arbor, on October 2-5, 2003.

The Seventh Quadrennial International Conference on Armenian Linguistics

Papers are invited dealing with any aspect of the linguistic structure
(including but not limited to historical linguistics, dialectology,
phonology, morphology, and syntax) of any variety of Armenian. Keynote
lectures will be delivered by Anaïd Donabédian (Paris), Theo van
Lint (Oxford), and Jos Weitenberg (Leiden).

The First Annual Conference on Modern Western Armenian

Scholars and interested individuals have long been keenly aware of the
need for serious and systematic studies of Modern Western Armenian as
one of the two literary standards and as a key to modern Armenian
tradition. This annual gathering is being launched with a view to
promoting research into all phases of Modern Western Armenian language
and linguistics. Although devoted to MWA, papers on Modern Eastern
Armenian are equally enthusiastically invited. While format and
content will certainly vary, emphasis will be placed on general
linguistic and comparative approaches. Keynote lectures will be
delivered by two invited scholars in the field. Professional teachers
of Modern Armenian (both Eastern and Western) are invited to submit
papers and/or attend the conference, as we intend to form an
association of teachers of Modern Armenian. For this first gathering we
envisage approximately twelve twenty-minute papers in addition to the
two ninety-minute keynote presentations.

General information

Scholars and students of all phases of Armenian and of linguistics are
cordially invited to participate in the conference. Prospective
participants should submit a one-page abstract as soon as possible but
no later than April 30, 2003. The abstract should clearly indicate the
name and institutional affiliation of the participant, title of the
talk, document format (if sent as an attachment), should include
copies of any special fonts used, and should be sent by electronic
mail to Bert Vaux at vauxfas.harvard.edu Accepted participants will
be notified by May 30, 2003. A limited number of grants to cover
travel and lodging are available for those participants whose papers
are accepted for presentation in the MWA conference, but who are
unable to procure support from their home institutions or other
sources. For more information, please contact Julie Septrion at
septrionumich.edu, Armenian Studies Program, 1080 South University,
Suite 3663 Ann Arbor, MI 48109 USA, tel. 734-764-1825, fax 734-763-9154.

We intend to publish the papers presented at the conference. All
accepted presenters will therefore be asked to submit an electronic
version of their papers at the time of the conference.

Schedule

We currently plan to have conference participants arrive on Thursday
for an opening reception in the evening. All lectures will take place
October 2-4, and on October 5 we will hold the roundtable discussions
of scholars and teachers of Modern Eastern and Western Armenian on
forming an association of teachers of Modern Armenian. Should the
number of participants exceed the expected figure, parallel sessions
will be held on Saturday. We are planning a farewell banquet for the
evening of the 4th.
