University or Organization: Universitat Pompeu Fabra Department: Department of Translation and Philology Rank of Job: Researcher Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics, Translation studies Description: 4-YEAR RESEARCH POSITION IN BARCELONA: either COMPUTATIONAL LINGUISTICS/MACHINE TRANSLATION or TRANSLATION STUDIES The Department of Translation and Philology at Universitat Pompeu Fabra (UPF) in Barcelona, Spain, offers a research position within the ''Ramon y Cajal'' program. Candidates interested in the position should have research experience and be active in ONE of the following two areas of research (see below for more details): -Computational Linguistics and Machine Translation -Translation studies Ramon y Cajal is a program sponsored by the Spanish Ministry of Science and Technology (MCYT), the aim of which is to attract researchers to Spanish universities and other research centres for an initial period of four years. The application and selection processes are handled directly by MCYT. Applicants must have a PhD, present a high-level research program and obtain the endorsement of the research unit they wish to join. Applications are reviewed by specific committees in different academic domains (in this case, philology and philosophy). The position in the Department of Translation and Philology will be filled by the department-endorsed candidate that obtains the highest mark in the MCYT-run evaluation. The Department will endorse only those candidates with suitable research profiles. POST DESCRIPTIONS Computational Linguistics and Machine Translation Candidates should be able to: - lead projects in the area of grammar development and parsing - program practical applications - lead discussions of state-of-the-art research in the field - interact both with linguists and computer scientists in a truly interdisciplinary research context - supervise PhD students - keep a balance between basic and applied research Translation studies: Candidates should be able to: - lead discussions of state-of-the-art research in the field - be knowledgeable in up-to-date strategies for translator training - have contacts in the international research community - supervise PhD students The successful candidate is also expected to participate in the graduate and undegraduate programs in translation, linguistics and multilingual communication in which the Department of Translation and Philology is involved.
