Fund Drive 2003 - The Foundation of LINGUIST With the rate of development of web browsers and of the internet in general, web pages made more than a couple years ago look quite out of date. Often with dull, grey backgrounds and few images, they look more like word processed documents than the bright magazine covers we demand today. Older pages often lack other features we have come to expect, such as fast and easy navigation, interactive pages, comprehensive search facilities and live updated content. We recognize this, and with a huge amount of planning, learning and working, we provide all these facilities and more on our new LINGUIST List website. However, throughout all this development lives and thrives our very foundation: the LINGUIST mailing list. Older than the oldest web page, LINGUIST is a true veteran of cyberspace, yet is still as indispensible today as it ever has been. Where else do you find out about job vacancies as soon as they become available? How else can you ask a difficult and demanding question to 17,000 of your fellow professionals and get replies back within days? With LINGUIST, you are kept up to date on conference developments and new book announcements; you can engage in discussion of contemporary issues or read reviews of newly published books. LINGUIST is a news service for linguistics, and through not needing to stick to a printing schedule, you find out the news as soon as we do. Of course, we would not let the mailing list stagnate and have developed it too. Over the years we have added new topics, such as 'Support', 'Software', and 'Media'. Issues are searchable at http://linguistlist.org/search/ and you can manage your subscription online at http://linguistlist.org/subs.html. Long-term subscribers will remember that once the only way to read back issues was to email a specially-worded message to our Listserv machine and wait for it to return the relevant issue to you. This way is still available, but browsing issues online at http://linguistlist.org/issues/master.html is considerably more user-friendly. Having online issues also allowed us to produce the LINGLITE version of LINGUIST, with which you receive a single email each day with links to the day's postings. Today, it might seem strange to call some of these services 'innovations' because they have been available for so long, and seem, well, rather basic. But over the lifetime of LINGUIST, innovations they are and they were only possible because of financial support. Imagine what LINGUIST List would be like now if those developments had not been possible. Imagine what LINGUIST List will be like in five years time, if we cannot develop today. To return to (and probably stretch) the magazine analogy, there are other, less desirable ways in which many websites have become like magazines. Take advertizing, for instance. While a well-practiced thumb can jump straight to page five of a magazine, there is often no way of avoiding the advertizing on many modern websites. Visitors to LINGUIST's website may have been annoyed by the popups that appeared recently; this is a reminder of how many websites have now been forced to include these as a source of revenue. Sometimes, the advertisements are not enough and, just like with a magazine, you find yourself paying four, five, maybe ten dollars a month for the privilege of being able to read them. We really do not want to follow the lead of commercial sites. We don't like popups any more than you do, and we certainly do not want to charge a subscription fee. Meet our Five Dollar Challenge, and in return you'll receive daily list posting and probably 30,000 pages, continually updated and augmented, and no adverts. Try getting *that* from a magazine. Michael Appleby Listserv Manager ******************************************************************** The LINGUIST List 'Just $5' Request ----------------------------------- The LINGUIST List has over 17,000 subscribers to the email list, and our website gets over 3 million hits a week. If every one of our 17,000+ subscribers donated Just $5, we would raise over $85,000 - that's a lot of money! We are only asking for $50,000 - but we do need this $50,000 if we are to survive and continue to bring you the free services that we offer. DONATE - Don't Hesitate: http://linguistlist.org/donate.html Instructions of How To Donate: http://linguistlist.org/donation.html (or see the bottom of this message) We like to thank our donors with amazing free gifts (see http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html), and this year many of our supporting publishers have donated some truly wonderful linguistic prizes to The LINGUIST List Publisher Prize Draw - as a donor you are automatically entered into this! This year we hope to raise $50,000 to support the students who work on LINGUIST List and keep the list running. Thank you from all the crew for your support. The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor. Many companies also offer a gift matching scheme, such that they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a scheme. HOW TO DONATE You can make a contribution by selecting one of three convenient payment methods: secure credit card form, check, or wire transfer. You can also PLEDGE your support to LINGUIST and pay later, i.e. send in a check. Also, if you do not want to use a credit card, but wish to pay in a currency other than US Dollars, you can donate via our European bank account held in Switzerland. See below for details: SECURE CREDIT CARD FORM: http://linguistlist.org/donate.html CHECK: Please make checks payable to 'The LINGUIST List Editorial Support Fund'.
