INTERNATIONAL SUMMER COURSE: ''LANGUAGE CONTACT: LINGUISTIC AND NEUROCOGNITIVE ASPECTS'' Location: Palacio Miramar, Donostia-San Sebastian, Basque Country, Spain Date: 03-Jul-2003 to 05-Jul-2003 Contact: Ricardo Etxepare Contact e-mail. retxepareMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueeuskalnet.net Linguistic subfields: General Linguistics, Cognitive Science, Neurolinguistics Meeting Description: Summer course ''Language contact: linguistic and neurocognitive approaches'' The University of the Basque Country and the Centre National de la Recherche Scientifique (UMR5478, France) are organizing an exciting international summer course on the linguistic and neurocognitive aspects of language contact and multilingual situations. This course will focus on the linguistic and neurocognitive aspects of bilingualism and multilingualism, while trying to provide an answer to questions such as: what is the cortical representation of the linguistic competence of bilingual and multilingual speakers? How do they diverge? How is language processed in bilingual and monolingual speakers? How are such speakers affected by different linguistic pathologies? How are more than one language acquired? To which extent do the distance between languages, the age and the nature of the exposure influence the acquisition process? How does the structure of the acquired languages change in a contact situation? Are Creole languages created out of functionally impoverished ''protolanguages'' such as Pidgins, as in the popular ''Pidgin-to-Creole Life-Cycle''? If so, how? If not, why not? What are some of the alternative scenarios and how do we evaluate them? What role does language acquisition play in Creole genesis? The aim of the course is to make a survey of the results, issues and problems of language contact in its linguistic and neurocognitive aspects. Its general approach notwithstanding, a substantial part of the course will be devoted to present recent investigations in the basque area, a rich multilingual space where important research has being carried out on the relevant issues in the last years. Registration Fees: There are grants accorded by the summer courses organization to both national and international students, which substantially reduce the cost of either registration fees or accomodation.
