University or Organization: Wesleyan University Department: Psychology Rank of Job: Research Project Director Specialty Areas: Language Acquisition, Phonetics, Psycholinguistics, Speech perception Description: PROJECT DIRECTOR Infant Speech Perception Research Wesleyan University Research Project Director: Full-time position at the Wesleyan University Infant Language Development Laboratory. This position is supported by a multi-site international research grant from the NIH (NIDCD) to investigate the effects of language experience on the perception and production of speech by infants and adults. The Project Director will oversee cross-language perceptual studies with infants and adults at the Wesleyan laboratory, in collaboration with the Principal Investigator, Dr. Catherine Best. This research program has been funded since 1986; the current funding cycle runs through the end of the academic year 2005-6. Qualifications: PhD in a relevant area of training (e.g., Developmental Psychology, Speech/Language Science, Linguistics) and experience with experimental studies of speech/language/cognition in infants. Applicants without a PhD, but with substantial developmental laboratory experience, will also be considered. Responsibilities: Training and supervising undergraduate and MA students in conducting infant and adult speech perception studies, overseeing data collection, supervising database management and subject recruitment by the team members, collaborating with the PI in statistical analyses and manuscript preparation, helping to prepare annual progress reports and grant renewals, and working with the grant manager. Opportunities: This position also includes time and opportunity for the candidate to develop and conduct additional related research projects. For applicants holding the PhD, an appointment as a Visiting Research Professor at the appropriate rank is possible. Job Specifications: Preferred start date early Fall 2003.
