This position is responsible for editing manuscripts for the dictionaries and other word-related reference books, especially by identifying, researching and writing definitions of dictionary entries; enter and revise entries in dictionary databases; create and adjust cross-reference entries; become familiar with style. Apply an understanding of linguistic processes in the development of new products and new features of existing products, as directed by senior staff. The Associate Editor reviews and corrects galleys, pages, film, and printouts. Responsibilities: - Edit manuscript, including writing definitions of new words; editing definitions of existing entries; editing material in the database and marking up manuscript for database input, identifying, defining and editing entries in specific groups; creating and adjusting cross-reference entries. - Process all stages of proof; help coordinate checking and marking galleys and pages. - Process corrigenda. - Contribute to the submission and development of new products and new features of existing products - Read and mark for citations in assigned publications - Perform special projects or other duties as assigned, including administrative support for the Senior Staff. - Contribute to research for new products and to marketing efforts as directed. - Answer correspondence from the public Qualifications: Master's degree in linguistics, the history of English, or a related area required. One to two years of experience as an assistant editor or its equivalent a must. Excellent verbal and written communication skills and editing skills required. Ability to work in cooperative team setting, meet deadlines while maintaining high standard of quality required. Some experience in the use of group software or lexical database software desirable.
