(um) einen Kopf krzer machen, nach Recht und Billigkeit, Gnade vor/fr Recht ergehen lassen. Phrases like these are frequently used in both spoken and written language. The quality of a dictionary can be measured in part by how well such phraseological units are presented. This thesis analyses the sensitivity of German lexicographers to phraseological phenomena over a period extending from the 18th century to the present. The work examines synchronous German monolingual dictionaries, including Johann Christoph ADELUNG's Grammatisch-kritisches Wrterbuch der Hochdeutschen Mundart (1793-1801), Joachim Heinrich CAMPE's Wrterbuch der Deutschen Sprache (1807-1811), Daniel SANDERS' Wrterbuch der Deutschen Sprache. Deutsches Wrterbuch (2000). The main aspects of the analysis are: Dictionary prefaces with regard to phraseological information given Lexicographical markers and presentation of fixed expressions in the dictionary entries Entry and explanation of phraseological terminology in these dictionaries This work chronicles the lexicographical presentation of fixed expressions spanning the period covered by these dictionaries. The study demonstrates that the dictionary prefaces are inadequate in terms of phraseological information provided, insufficient phraseological terminology entry and explanation as well as the scant attention paid to such important issues as lexicographical markers and presentation of fixed expressions. The thesis offers varied proposals for more suitable presentation of phraseological units in German monolingual dictionaries and points to the need for uniform lexicographic standards in the presentation of fixed expressions.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
