University or Organization: University of Manchester Department: Linguistics Rank of Job: Research Assistant Specialty Areas: Typology, Language Contact Description: RESEARCH ASSISTANT (REF: 463/03) Applications are invited for the above position on a three-year research project on 'Convergence and Linguistic Areas', funded by the Arts and Humanities Research Board, and coordinated by Dr Yaron Matras at the Department of Linguistics. This is a three-year fixed term contract commencing on 1 September 2003. Starting salary: GBP 21,125 per annum The aim of the project is to conduct a comparative investigation of linguistic areas, to evaluate a sample of areas, and to assess the relations between convergence, borrowing, and bilingualism. The successful candidate will construct and manage the project's cross-linguistic database on borrowing and convergence, contribute to the project's output of publications on linguistic areas, borrowing, convergence and bilingualism, and work in a research team and be expected to accommodate to the team's working schedule and priorities. Applicants must have a PhD specialising in linguistic typology / historical linguistics, and/or language contact/bilingualism, an interest in linguistic areas and areal typology, and ability and readiness to work in a research team. A record of publications, experience with linguistic databases, and expertise in one or more linguistic areas are advantages.
