We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.
To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at

Subject: ergative case marking
Can anybody tell me the names of any languages (and relevant sources)
wherein the 'ergative' case marking is also used for the 'accusative'?
Other conflations such as ergative/genitive or ergative/instrumental
are of course much more common. One language I know to make this
conflation is Hiligaynon (Philippine), where *sang* marks ergative in
ergative patterns and accusative in accusative patterns, e.g.:
(a) nagsulat ang babaye sang libro (sang=acc)
'the woman wrote the book'
(b) ginsulat sang babaye ang libro (sang=erg)
'the woman wrote the book'
(c) ginsulate ang libro
'the book was written'
Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Dear Colleagues,
Please, can anyone tell me the full name and dates of birth and death
(only years) of A. H. Genko, who in 1934 devised a latin alphabet.
Yours faithfully,
Javier Ruiz de Aguirre
