The study of dialogue analysis has benefited a great deal from the
contributions of many different disciplines, such as linguistics,
philosophy, anthropology, and sociology. The productivity of this
variety of input can be seen in the several methodological traditions,
including a speech act theoretic approach to dialogue, discourse
analysis, conversation analysis, among others. Indeed, in recent
years, presentations given at the various conferences of the
International Association for Dialogue Analysis have made use of
various theoretical approaches. While the diversity of the multiple
disciplines, traditions, and scholars does not lend itself to a
single, simple theory of dialogue analysis, the richness of
interdisciplinary approaches adds to a deeper understanding of the
complex nature of dialogic interaction.

In the upcoming workshop, 40-60 scholars will be invited to present
their work on the theme of "Theoretical Approaches to Dialogue
Analysis" over the course of four days in the spring of 2004.
Accepted presentations will be arranged around the various approaches
and/or methodologies. It is anticipated that the workshop will begin
on a Tuesday evening with an opening plenary and run until Saturday.
Individual presentations will last 20 minutes with 10 minutes for
questions and answers. Presentations will be organized consecutively
to give all participants the opportunity to hear and discuss the
different theoretical and methodological trends in dialogue analysis.

Presentations may be made in any language the presenter chooses - IADA
has previously accepted English, German, Italian, and French.
However, in making a decision, the presenter is asked to consider the
accessibility of the presentation to the widest number of audience
members.

Workshop Description:

Konnektoren, d.h. Konjunktionen und satzverkn�pfende Adverbien, sind
Schnittpunkte par excellence in der Interaktion von Syntax,
Informations- und Pr�suppositionsstruktur, prosodischer Struktur,
lexikalischer und kontextgesteuerter Bedeutung. Als besondere
Herausforderung an Grammatikographie und Lexikographie erweist sich
dabei die Beschreibung der Konnektorensemantik: wegen der genannten
Schnittstellenph�nomene (s. Lang/Umbach 2002), wegen der notorischen
Polysemie bzw. Vagheit der Einheiten wie auch wegen der geringen
Trennsch�rfe traditioneller Klassen wie kausal, temporal, konditional
etc. Eine systematische, die paradigmatischen Z�ge erfassende Semantik
der Konnektoren steht bis heute aus. Die Koordinatoren, die derzeit am
IDS ein Handbuch zur Konnektorensemantik in Erg�nzung zum Handbuch der
Konnektorensyntax (Pasch/Brau�e/Breindl/Wa�ner (im Druck)) erarbeiten,
wollen mit der Arbeitsgruppe ausloten, welche Beschreibungsparameter
und -dimensionen im Hinblick auf den Schnittstellencharakter von
Konnektoren f�r eine systematische Konnektorensemantik geeignet
bzw. notwendig sind. Dass dabei unterschiedliche theoretische und
methodische Ans�tze zum Tragen kommen (formal-semantische,
lexikalisch-semantische, satzsemantische, text- und
diskurslinguistische, argumentationstheoretische, RST) ist durchaus
erw�nscht.

Um bei dieser Spannbreite dennoch einen produktiven Austausch zu
gew�hrleisten, ist eine Konzentration auf kausale Konnektoren im
weitesten Sinne vorgesehen (einschlie�lich konsekutiver, konklusiver,
instrumentaler, finaler; und unter Ber�cksichtigung der Abgrenzung zu
verwandten Relationen, insbesondere Konditionalit�t und
Konzessivit�t). Relevante Themenbereiche sind hier u.a.: Kausale
Konnektoren und ihre Interaktion mit der Verbstellung,
Konnektorstellung, Intonation, Fokus-Hintergrund-Gliederung,
Faktizit�ts- und Modalit�tsindikatoren und Verbmodus,
Grammatikalisierung von Konnektoren (vgl. etwa Konerding 2002);
Kausalkonnektoren und logische Schlussregeln, die Rolle der
Pr�suppositionen, die Relevanz der Art der Konnekte (generische vs
singul�re Sachverhalte; Handlungen, Ereignisse, Zust�nde) etc.
