SECOND CALL FOR PAPERS Invited Speakers Nigel Fabb (University of Strathclyde) Murray Kinloch Memorial Lectur: Form as Content There are two kinds of form. One kind is constitutive, exemplified by linguistic form. The other, exemplified by the forms of verbal art, holds of a text by virtue of being the content of a thought about the text, an inference for which the text provides evidence. Literary form is best explained by pragmatics, with the possible exception of certain aspects of metrical form in poetry, which may be constitutive and share characteristics with phonological form. This account raises the question of how our experience of verbal art relates to our mental representations of its forms. Debbie Sawczak (Toronto) ''Etymologies in School Dictionaries'' Ms Sawczak will explore some of the issues involved in supplying young Canadian dictionary users with etymologies that are both informative and accessible. The goal of this conference is to highlight the mutually reinforcing connection between linguistics and a range of disciplines, including but not limited to business, Canadian studies, geography, the humanities, medicine, psychology, and womens studies. The conference will focus on the unique contributions which linguistics makes to these other disciplines. Proposals are welcomed in English or French, for papers relating to the conference theme.
