Title: Talking Rhythm Stressing Tone Subtitle: The Role of Prominence in Anglo-West African Creole Languages Series Title: Caribbean Language Series Publication Year: 2003 Publisher: Arawak Publications Availability: Available Author: Hubert Devonish Paperback: ISBN: 9768189258, Pages: 214, Price: US$20 Abstract: Using an original concept of how prominence works in the phonology, Talking Rhythm Stressing Tone makes a systematic comparison of the suprasegmental systems of the Anglo-West African Creole languages spoken in the Caribbean, South America and West Africa. The original nature of the theoretical approach produces new and revealing analyses of the hybrid suprasegmental systems of these languages. These analyses point to the origins of these systems, emerging as they did out of situations of language contact. The author examines how enslaved speakers of West African languages modified the tonal systems they originally used in their native languages to accommodate the mass of new vocabulary, mainly from English, with which they were faced in plantation societies in the Americas. The work demonstrates the processes by which this happened and explores in detail the end point of these processes, i.e. the combined systems of tone and stress typical of modern Anglo-West African Creole languages.
