University or Organization: National Research Council of Canada Department: Language Technology Research Centre Rank of Job: Researcher Specialty Areas: Computational Linguistics Description: Under the general direction of the Director, Language Technology Research Centre, Institute for Information Technology, the incumbents will perform world class research, will participate in the development of the research plans and will build partnerships with the business, research, academic, and government communities across Canada and abroad. In addition, the successful candidates will be expected to have the potential to formulate new projects of potential interest to external stakeholders. The successful candidates will contribute to projects by working together with other team members of the Centre and NRC, and ensuring that client relationships are and remain positive. Through presentation of research results and other outreach activities, the successful candidates will ensure that the Centre achievements are known and in collaboration with the Business Office search for new opportunities for collaborative work and partnerships. The successful candidates will be responsible for participating in the planning process that leads to the establishment of the Centre's projects and providing input to the long term strategic planning. Candidates must possess a Ph.D. in computer science or other field of science in a field relevant to the proposed research programs. A Masters degree will be considered if demonstration is made of high research calibre. The candidate must have demonstrated capabilities in performing high calibre computational linguistics research preferably in French and English, including development of algorithms, and prototype software. Experience supervising junior researchers and/or programmers. Project management expertise and experience in dealing with industrial clients and partners in a team setting will be highly valuable. Bilingual BBB/BBB (imperative) In depth knowledge of and experience in at least one area relevant to language technology: machine translation, speech recognition, machine learning, natural language processing, computational linguistic, computer assisted language learning, and information retrieval. Experience performing research on more than one human language is an asset. Ability to perform leading edge research; ability to publish scientific papers; ability to create prototype software.
