We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Dear All,
I seem to remember a paper from the early seventies on these English
gerund constructions which are only grammatical if ''broken up''. For
example:
Breaking up is hard to do.
* It is hard to do breaking up.
Eating Dave does with his father (Drinking he does with his brother).
* Dave does eating with his father...
I think it was by Paul Schachter, but I might be mis-remembering...
Does anyone know the paper I'm thinking of, or a paper which has been
written on these structures?
Best,
Seth.
