Qs: Variability Index, Power Relations and Spanish
Editor for this issue: Naomi Fox <fox

We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually
best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is
then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was
instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we
would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate.
In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it
is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have
taken the trouble to respond to the query.

Message 1: Pairwise Variability Index calculation

From: Simone Ashby <simone

Subject: Pairwise Variability Index calculation
In applying Pairwise Variability Index calculations (Low, Grabe et
al.) to my syllable duration data, I get an overwhelming proportion of
negative values corresponding to my IPs. Does anyone know if this is
to be expected? (Note: I'm using English data.)
Thanks!

Subject: Courses/readings on power relations and Spanish
Dear Linguist readers,
I am putting together a course proposal on power relations (social,
economic, governmental) and Spanish. I would be grateful if you can
direct me to any readings on this topic, especially readings written
in Spanish; or if you have any relevant course syllabi that you would
be willing to share ideas from. If you have any assistance to offer, a
quick reply would be immensely appreciated. Thank you.
Sincerely,
Seth Minkoff
