The conference will be held in the 14th century monastery, the Certosa di Pontignano, situated a few kilometres outside of Siena in the Chianti hills. This is an idyllic setting for a conference, eminently suitable for reflection and the exchange of ideas. The Certosa is surrounded by wonderful walking country - vineyards and olive groves - and in fact produces its own wine and oil. Information on the history, location etc. of the conference venue can be found on the website http://www.unisi.it/servizi/certosa/. Each half-day session will be preceded by an invited 40-minute Plenary and concluded by a-30 minute paper by a Guest Speaker. After each plenary a discussant will raise questions to stimulate reflection on issues emerging from the paper. Other speakers will be given a 20 minute slot for their papers. There will also be the possibility of presenting a poster and a slot on the morning of the 16th will be dedicated to this purpose. The final session will be organised in the form of a round table. Participants and invited speakers will discuss theoretical and methodological issues which emerge from the papers presented in the previous sessions. Speakers who have accepted to join us include Ken Hyland, John Swales, Ellen Valle, Paul Drew, Susan Hunston, Karin Aimer, Anna Mauranen, Wolfgang Teubert and John Sinclair. The required format for submissions is an abstract of 800/1000 words outlining the main thrust and conclusions of the paper. The deadline for submissions is 28.2.2003. The outcome of submissions will be notified by 20.3.2003. The final draft must be sent to the discussant by May 15th, 2003. Assessing the Country of Origin of Creole Speaking Asylum Seekers Location: Honolulu, HI, United States of America Date: 16-Aug-2003 - 16-Aug-2003 Contact Person: Jacques Arends Meeting Email: j.arendsMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issuehum.uva.nl Linguistic Subfield(s): Sociolinguistics This is a session of the following conference: Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics 2003 Meeting Description: Special panel on the use of language analysis in assessing asylum applications made by speakers of pidgin and creole languages. A special panel at SPCL's (Society for Pidgin and Creole Linguistics) Hawaii conference (8/14-17/03)is being considered, devoted to the role of language analysis in assessing asylum applications made by speakers of pidgin and creole languages. In several European countries (for example The Netherlands), such analyses are often made by non-linguists, a practice which has led to misidentification in a number of cases. A typical case would be a speaker of Sierra Leone Krio who, being misidentified as a speaker of Nigerian Pidgin English, will be refused asylum in the Netherlands and sent to Nigeria (Nigeria is considered a safe country while Sierra Leone is not). Anyone who would be interested in participating in this panel is invited to reply to Jacques Arends at: j.arends
