WE INVITE CONTRIBUTIONS FOR A PLANNED MAJOR VOLUME ON Politeness, Face, and the Linguistic Construction of Personhood in Caribbean Creoles CALL FOR ABSTRACTS Politeness phenomena have become a vast and fruitful field of linguistic research ever since Brown & Levinson's much-debated study on the subject. Questions of universal and culture-specific linguistic politeness practices, cross-cultural versus local linguistic constructions of personhood (cf. Goffman, Geertz), the conception of face in the interaction of ethnic, social and regional groups have been approached from perspectives of interactional sociolinguistics, pragmatics, sociology, as well as linguistic and cultural anthropology. With regard to the Caribbean, and especially to Creole varieties, there are but a few isolated strands of research in this area. We would now like to fill this gap by inviting innovative contributions on a wide range of topics such as greetings, address forms, various speech acts (such as requests, apologies, thanks, insults, etc.), socialization and discourse, parent-child discourse, register choice and communicative repertoire in the Caribbean context. Contributions should preferably be based on empirical data (qualitative, or a combination of qualitative and quantitative), with a theoretical grounding in the ethnography of communication, interactional sociolinguistics or related approaches. Please send your title and abstract (appr. 200 words) by June 15, 2003 to one of the e-mail addresses below. Full papers are expected by the end of 2003, so that a volume of contributions can be published in 2004. muehleisenMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueem.uni-frankfurt.de (Dr. Susanne Muehleisen) migge
