The guest speakers are Professor Guy Cook (University of Reading), Professor Gunther Kress (University of London, Institute of Education), and Professor Sue Walker (University of Reading). The objective of the event is to bring together researchers working in areas of applied linguistics which impinge on multimodality, to address the questions of how applied linguistics may be informed by current research on multimodality, and how applied linguistics can contribute to the development of knowledge about multimodality. We welcome presentations on any of the following themes: -multimodality and the new media -multimodality and multi-mediality in academic and educational contexts -multimodality and literacy practices -the creation of multimodal corpora -multimodality and typography -multimodal text analysis -theoretical concerns, including discussion and evaluation of appropriate theoretical and analytical frameworks for the study of multimodal discourse. The deadline for abstracts for 40-minute papers is 31 March 2003. Abstracts should be submitted as e-mail attachments to James Simpson (j.e.b.simpson
reading.ac.uk) and should be no longer than 300 words. Abstracts should also contain the following information: (1)Paper title (2)Name(s) of author(s) (3)Affiliation(s) of author(s) (4)Contact information (postal address, e-mail address and telephone number) (5) Equipment needed for the presentation We especially encourage the submission of proposals from postgraduate students. We are offering three student scholarships for the seminar for student members of BAAL which will cover accommodation and registration. If you are interested in applying for a scholarship, you should submit an application by 31 March 2003. This should be in the form of a 200-word statement outlining the relevance of the seminar to your own research. Priority will be given to those presenting a paper. Short versions of accepted papers will be written and circulated before the event in order to optimise the level of discussion.
