Dear Linguists, Welcome to The LINGUIST List Fund Drive 2003. Read on for the FUN stuff! Once again the time is upon us to bombard you with wonderfully worded emails asking you to show your support to LINGUIST by making a donation. "Has it really been a year?", we hear you shout. "Wasn't it only yesterday that they were asking me for money?" It really is amazing how time flies, but it has been a year since our last Fund Drive when the generosity of the linguistics community helped us reach nearly $50,000. This year we hope to beat this, so we have set our target at $50,000. We need your help! - For the hundredes of you that did donate last year - Thank you once again! We hope that the services we provide have been useful and have improved, making you feel satisfied that the donation was worthwhile. We now humbly request that you extend your generosity and support us once again. - For those of you that might not have supported LINGUIST yet, we hope that within the next few weeks we can convince you that by making a donation, you really are contributing to a worthy cause. The LINGUIST List is free to subscribers, always has been, and hopefully always will be! The 2000+ webpages that form the LINGUIST List website, together with the gigantic amount of data that is stored on our database server is all accessible for free! Where do you go if you want to find a job or postgraduate position? Where do you find out about all the latest linguistic publications? How can you disseminate your PhD dissertation to the community? The answer to these and many other questions is The LINGUIST List. In the weeks to come we will send you emails from our student editors, each one highlighting different aspects of the site and some of the behind the scenes stuff as well. Each email will also ask you, very nicely of course, to make a small donation to LINGUIST. The money we raise each year goes directly to supporting these students (of which I am one) through their Masters degree, and keeps LINGUIST operating and improving its services. And how will we thank you for your kindness? Every year we like to give our donors a gift, and this year is no exception. The theme for this fund drive is food and cooking, because we know how much linguists love their food. For those of you that don't know, one of the fun items on the site is the LINGUIST Cookbook (visit: http://linguistlist.org/cookbook/index.html ). For many years we have hoped to publish this as a book, and this year we are happy to announce the first volumn entitled 'The LINGUIST List Cookbook'. We also have a matching apron with the slogan 'The LINGUIST List Cook'. We also have the highly fashionable LINGUIST List T-Shirt; worn by linguists around the world, and the highly practical and eye-catching Tote Bag--new last year and extremely popular. Take a look at: http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html On top of all these lovely gifts we give away, we also want to entertain you. So this year we will have 'FUNd Drive FUN Friday', when we will send out some more lighthearted emails and direct you to some fun things happening on the website. Those of you that were with us last year may remember the story of Percival, the super talented cat that was sold to a Russian circus to raise money for LINGUIST. We managed to get Percy back, but now he has embarked on some new adventures. Watch out for 'The Continuing Saga of Percival, the LINGUIST List Cat'. Also being researched as we speak, the next issue of 'MaLinga', packed with dubious gossip and doubtful reporting - keep your eyes open for that. Please help us reach our target of $50,000. Even a small donation really does make a difference. To donate now using our secure web form, visit: http://linguistlist.org/donate.html For instructions on how to donate, or how to make a pledge now and pay later, see Message 3 in this issue or visit: http://linguistlist.org/donation.html Thank you for your support.Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
Dear LINGUISTS, This year we decided to have a theme to our fund drive: Food and Cooking. For many years we have operated an online cook book, where linguists from around the world can share recipes and show off their culinary expertise. http://linguistlist.org/cookbook/index.html For a long time now we have wanted to publish a book version of the recipes as they are all so good, but unfortunately other more important projects have always taken precedence, leaving the cookbook simmering away on the ol' back burner, if you'll excuse the pun. Well, this year we worked some magic and found some extra time, and we are very proud to announce the publication of Volume 1 of 'The LINGUIST List Cookbook' 2003. We have so many recipes online, that we couldn't include them all, so we decided to make the cookbook an ongoing thing, publishing a volume every two years or so. This way we can include new recipes that our users submit. "So how do I get my hands on this new cookbook?" we hear you shout. We are giving them away as gifts to our donors, so all you have to do is make a donation and we'll pop one in the post to you when the fund drive is over. And if that is not enough, we are also giving away a beautifully fashioned matching apron that you can impress your friends and family with when you hold those linguistics dinner parties. These aprons are the ultimate accessory for any discerning linguistic chef; the slogan on the aprons reads 'The LINGUIST List Cook'. To see some photos of 'The LINGUIST List Cookbook' and 'The LINGUIST List Cook' aprons, as well as the other snazzy gifts on offer, visit: http://linguistlist.org/premiums.html We hope you will like these gifts. It is only through the continued support from subscribers like yourself that LINGUIST can survive; the gifts we give away each year are our way of saying thank you for your generosity. As a small taster of the cookbook, below is one of the recipes that has been included in Volume 1. For detailed information on making a donation, please read the next message in this issue, or visit: http://linguistlist.org/donation.html Once again, thank you from all the LINGUIST List crew. ***************************************************************************** Southwestern Onion Soup by Paul Baltes Ingredients: -6 large (about 3 1/2 lb) onions, thinly sliced (choose your favorites) -7 1/2 cups chicken or vegetable broth -1 teaspoon ground cumin -1/2 teaspoon ground coriander -1/2 teaspoon oregano -1/3 cup flour -2 tablespoons ground dried chilies (chipotle, New Mexico, California, or your favorites) -1 1/4 cups (about 5-6 ozs) shredded pepperjack or regular jack cheese with jalapenos -Fried corn tortilla strips (included in recipe) -1/3 cup fresh cilantro Directions: In a 5-6 quart pan, combine onions, 1 cup of the broth, cumin, coriander, and oregano. Cover and cook over medium heat, stirring occasionally, until most of the liquid evaporates (about 25-30 minutes). Uncover the pan and turn heat to high; stir often, scraping free the browned onions sticking to the bottom of the pan; stir and scrape until all the onions are a rich caramel color (about 15-20 minutes). Meanwhile mix 6 1/2 cups broth with the 1 cup flour until smooth. Add ground chiles to onions and mix well. Pour broth/flour mixture over the onions. Stir over high heat until boiling. Reduce heat to a gentle simmer and cook 15 to 20 minutes to blend flavors--stirring often. (you can make this up to one day ahead--to reheat stir often over medium heat until steaming). Ladle soup into bowls over cheese. Add tortilla strips and cilantro (serves 4) Fried Tortilla strips: Cut corn tortillas into 1/4" wide strips. Fry in about 1/4" oil (canola, corn or vegetable work best) for about 1 minute each until golden and crisp. Drain on paper towels (if making ahead store in an airtight container up to 1 day).Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
