Assistant Professor in the Programme in Language and Communication (Ref.: RF-2002/2003-257) Applications are invited for appointment as Assistant Professor in the Programme in Language and Communication in the Faculty of Arts. The appointee will be the Coordinator of the Programme in Language and Communication. The appointment, which is subject to availability of funding, will initially be made on a three-year fixed-term basis, tenable from October 1, 2003 and with the possibility of renewal. The Programme in Language and Communication is a new undergraduate interdisciplinary studies programme (UISP) in the Faculty of Arts. The programme will focus on the study and use of language and languages, and will include work on semantics, pragmatics and the philosophical problems of language. Other themes include discourse, culture and the politics of language, as well as a focus on usage, skills and media. The programme stands independent of departments within the Faculty of Arts but draws on their expertise through team teaching and collaborative research. Applicants should possess a Ph.D. degree, and should be able to demonstrate both a strong publication record and a well-developed research agenda. Applicants should also be able to provide evidence of teaching excellence with a solid background in one of the core areas of language, linguistics or philosophy, and experience in interdisciplinary teaching. Strong interpersonal skills will be required for this demanding position. Annual salary for an Assistant Professor (in the grade of Lecturer) is on an 11-point scale (which is subject to review from time to time at the entire discretion of the University), with starting salary depending on qualifications and experience [attracting contract-end gratuity and University contribution to a retirement benefits scheme, totalling up to 15% of basic salary]: HK$556,260 - 929,220 (approx. US$1=HK$7.8). An appointee with an annual salary at HK$743,280 or above may be considered for the award of the title of Associate Professor on the basis of academic merits and achievements. At current rates, salaries tax does not exceed 15% of gross income. The appointment carries leave, medical and dental benefits.
