PhD Course in Pragmatics �-rebro University, Sweden 22-30 May, 2003 Interdisciplinary Pragmatics: Ethnopragmatics, Pragma-rhetoric and Current Issues in Pragmatics The aim of the course is to bring together researchers and graduate students from several areas of research in linguistics, rhetoric, linguistic anthropology, communication studies, and related disciplines. The course language is English, but certain lecture illustrations and seminar discussions will focus on other languages too, including Swedish and languages suggested by the course participants. The lectures and seminar discussions are intended to highlight and further explore the interdisciplinary nature of pragmatics and ethnopragmatics, current issues in pragmatics, as well as a number of rhetorical perspectivisations of pragmatics. The course consists of three course modules, which include lectures, workshops and seminars. 1. Ethnopragmatics - Discourse practices in cultural context Teacher: Clifford Goddard, Professor of Linguistics at the University of New England, Australia 2. Pragma-rhetoric - Approaches to the rhetoric-pragmatics interface Teacher: Cornelia Ilie, Professor of English Linguistics at �-rebro University, Sweden 3. Current issues in pragmatics Teacher: Jacob Mey, Professor Emeritus at the University of Texas, Austin, and Odense University, Denmark If they wish, graduate students may participate in the course for credit (5 Swedish credit points), which can be earned by meeting course requirements (after preliminary agreement with their respective thesis supervisors). The requirements consist of active attendance, workshop activities, seminar assignments and final paper.
