CALL FOR PAPERS - GAL - 2003, TUEBINGEN, GERMANY, 25/27 - SEPTEMBER - 2003 Contrastive Linguistics and Intercultural Communication The theme of Section 9 of the GAL (German Applied Linguistics, Gesellschaft f�r Angewandte Linguistik) Meeting 2003 will be: The transmission of intercultural competence for and in particular institutional situations The necessity of the acquisition of intercultural competence for the actual development of a knowledge society is, at present, indisputable. Furthermore, intercultural competence is no longer seen only as 'cultural awareness' or as an additional skill that stands next to foreign language competences. Instead, it is becoming increasingly seen as a form of reflexive action knowledge for repairing intercultural misunderstandings, as for example, the constructing of a 'common ground' that leads to intercultural understanding. We owe these insights to the many empirical analyses of authentic intercultural situations in which the relationship between intercultural and institutional discourse structures have been examined. In addition to intercultural business communication, many other instutional situations such as doctor-patient communication, student exchange programs, administrative language, consultation discourses and communication in the institutions of the European Union have been analyzed. It is for these reasons that it is necessary to develop didactic concepts with which to efficiently transmit knowledge of actions to those (functionaries and clients) directly affected in various institutional situations This section is aimed at researchers and developers who have empirically analyzed intercultural communication, and who would have an interest in discussing the following questions (presenters may, of course, also suggest other relevant questions to this topic): - How can we describe intercultural competence for specific institutional situations? - How can we apply authentic discourse to educational and training measures, and with what results? - How can we best utilize the intercultural constellation in a training or continuing education program? - How can the results and effects of intercultural training or educational measures be evaluated or controlled? - Does there exist a specific technical language for intercultural trainers? In this section of GAL, papers may address both intercultural institutional communication and questions concerning transmission. The organisers invite interested participants to submit abstracts for Section 9. While the organizers are not able to support the participants' travel or accommodation costs, we can provide supporting letters for funding applications.
