In the March 31 issue of The Washington Post (on page A3!) Robert E. Pierre has written a 1,500-word article headlined "Northwest Tribe Struggles to Revive Its Language." The article features linguist Timothy Montler's efforts on Klallam Language preservation/revival, and cites other people who have been trained as cultural specialists. (Klallam has only 3-4 fluent native speakers). This article documents the discrimination faced by older generations, and the current efforts in language preservation. An on-line version of the article, available for free until around April 13, may be found at: http://www.washingtonpost.com/wp-dyn/articles/A54559-2003Mar30.html - Paul Fallon Dept. of English Howard University Washington, DCMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
