Dear linguists, Have you ever been to Iran for a conference or sth? If yes, then you know how it looks when your aeroplane lands at Mehrabad Airport: the first impression is that there's almost no colour around. Almost everything is brown. After you land, you are taken to customs in a bus so old that you probably can't find one like it anywhere else. When you finally manage to get away from the airport, you are surprised to see so many oldie cars still moving around in narrow streets built half a century ago. The hotel you stay in and the university building where your conference is held are not much better. And when you make the fatal mistake of having a look at the library, you're terrified out of your wits when you learn that almost all of its dusty books on its dusty shelves date back to a time you were not even born! BUT people in linguistics departments are not dinosaurs at all. They look like any other colleagues of ours: familiar with the latest trends and topics of discussion in the field, where and when conferences on such and such are held, which books and journals have recently come out, which teaching positions and other jobs of interest to linguists are now available here and there, ..., even which friends and colleagues of ours have left us forever. Surprised? Of course not! Linguists--whether in NY, London, Paris, Beijing, New Delhi, or Tehran--have been reading the same LINGUIST list issues for years. Let's not forget that all this has been made possible by the generous donations made by members. We don't want to see the Tower of Babel left unfinished once more, do we? Then let's help the LINGUIST list people get along. How? You know how. Ahmad R. Lotfi, PhD English Dept. Azad University (IRAN) ********************************************************************** We have already raised over $19,000! Please help us reach our target of $60,000. Even a small donation really does make a difference! As a 501(c)3 organization, LINGUIST qualifies for corporate donation-matching programs; and, of course, your donation is tax deductible. To donate now using our secure web form, visit: http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html For instructions on how to donate, or how to make a pledge now and pay later, visit: http://linguistlist.org/donation.html Thank you very much for your support!Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $60,000. This money will go to help keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year. There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST! You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at: http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html You can also pledge right now and pay later, at: http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html For all information on donating, including information on how to donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit: http://www.linguistlist.org/donation.html ALREADY PLEDGED? If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay by credit card, please go to: http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the dropdown list provided. The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor. Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program. Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!Mail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issue
