Dear Subscribers,

Since 1993, when the LINGUIST assistantships were inaugurated,
LINGUIST subscribers have financed the educations of 45 outstanding
graduate students, including this year's crew. Those of you who have
contributed to LINGUIST over the past 10 years can feel proud that you
have helped these students pursue their educational and career goals.
Please help us support the outstanding students who are now providing
you with the services that you have come to expect from LINGUIST. If
you have not yet donated to the Linguist Fund Drive, please do so
now--all of your donations go directly to student support.

Over the weekend your donations have funded another one of our crew
members--Takako Matsui. As each on of our crew members is funded, we
will post their personal letter so that you can see where your
donations go! Below is Tako's letter.

Dear Subscribers,

I am relativerly a new member of the LINGUIST List. I started last
year...wow.. I can't believe it has been almost a year since I joined
in this wonderful group, (or I would say 'the family').

I am originally from Japan, but I have been in the U.S for nine years.
Because I worked as a translator for a while, I came to be very
interested in 'languages' and wanted to study this particular field at
an academic level. I chose the Linguistic program at Eastern Michigan
University. Part of the reason that I came to EMU was that I earned my
BS here, but the other part (and actually the most part) of the reason
was that I knew how great the LINGUIST List is.

As I expected, working at the LINGUIST List is... JUST great. The
LINGUIST List is what it makes it possible for me to continue my
academic work. LINGUIST pays for my school and also I have learned
what is currently going on in the Linguistics community. In addition,
working for LINGUIST also gives me an opportunity to learn computer
skills. When I started, I was frightened because I had almost 'zero'
computer skills that were necessary to commit various tasks and
projects at the LINGUIST List. But, all of the other LINGUIST crew
were always there to help me.

I have multiple tasks in the LINGUIST List. Sometimes, it is just
overwhelming in terms of the fact I have to learn new things
continuously. It is challenging, but at the same time I enjoy being a
part of the LINGUIST List, because the LINGUIST List is the way to
make my dream come true!

Message 2: How to Donate...

Date: 16 Mar 2004 08:56:08 -0000
From: linguist <linguistlinguistlist.org>
Subject: How to Donate...

This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $60,000. This money will go
to help keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student
Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donate.html

You can also pledge right now and pay later, at:
http://www.linguistlist.org/pledge.html

For all information on donating, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:
http://www.linguistlist.org/donation.html

ALREADY PLEDGED?
If you have already pledged to LINGUIST and would now like to pay by
credit card, please go to:

http://linguistlist.org/creditcard-general.html

and select 'PAY PREVIOUS PLEDGE' as the Type of Payment from the
dropdown list provided.

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University
and as such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is
a registered 501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is
38-6005986. These donations can be offset against your federal and
sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will
match any gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this
entails your contacting your human resources department and sending us
a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns to your employer.
This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny.
Please take a moment to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
