Dissertation Abstract 

A pragmatic interpretation of questioning is intended for a discussion
of the speech act of questioning (Q-ing)in a pragmatic
(context-dependent ) fashion. By 'pragmatic' ,the author means
something practical and broader than the Levinsonian model. What the
author is interested in , inlike most orthodox pragmaticians, is the
subjective factors affecting utterance constructing processes. Part
One is an examination of the micro-structure of a typical Q-ing
utterance( which is a supro-sentential functional entity). Part Two
examines the informational properties of Q-ing, based on the theory of
relevance,with intention-procedure duality.Part Three examines the
interpersonal functions of questioning. Six chapters are devoted to
the discussion. The whole paper is written in Chinese, with English
and Chinese examples to illustrate my views.
