linguistlist.org>Dear Linguists, Since 2003 the LINGUIST List has been participating in a Collaborative Project with The Rosetta Project: the All Language Archive. This collaboration aims to build a digital library of all documented human languages for reference, research, and education. The LINGUIST List contribution to the project is to develop and maintain a database of "People" to cover the majority of contemporary working linguists. We are going to offer information on their teaching and research interests, publications, institutional affiliations, courses offered and sharable pedagogical materials. Within two years, we are trying to accomplish the following objectives: 1. Expand the person database to ensure that it covers the activities and interests of the majority of working linguists in the world. 2. Develop person registration forms that invite linguists to list the language documentation that they have developed. 3. Develop a centralized search facility allowing users to enter a language name and retrieve information about individuals working on this language, as well as relevant language documentation, research and teaching material. Such a facility would integrate results from several search engines currently available on the LINGUIST and Rosetta site. 4. Develop user-friendly interfaces to allow individuals to update their own personal records in the database. 5. Develop software that allows the Rosetta .people curator. to compile and email groups of individuals selected on the basis of the language, language families, or language regions in which they specialize. This is the first year and what we are doing is updating the person directory. The All Language Project team went through institutions in the US and added and/or updated our database, focusing on language and/or language family specialty, linguistic subfield, institution, and e-mail address, and all of this information is open to public. Since we have finished all of the institution in the U.S., we will start working on institution outside the U.S., in places such as Europe, Australia, Africa, the Middle East, and East Asia. The second stage of this project will be to confirm the information that we have in our database right now. As soon as we finish adding/updating our database, we will start sending linguists e-mails to ask them to check their information. This is just one example of the many projects that we here at LINGUIST are involved in, and an examples of one of the many ways your donations are used.
