Alvdalska distinguishes itself from other languages in the region by on one hand preserving a large part of the original Norse lexicon, nasal vowels, opposition between aspirated vs. unaspirated d, grammatical cases and on the other by e.g. introducing new diphtongs and lexical innovations. Functioning as the main language in the Alvdalen parish until few decades ago, Alvdalska is today a highly threatened variety.
