Members of the English Department at the University of North Texas (UNT) note with sadness the death of WALTER LOUIS SPITZ in Thailand January 4, 2004 of a heart attack. Walter graduated with a Masters in English from UNT in 1984. He went on to get his Ph.D. in Linguistics from Rice University in 1997. After teaching in Japan and Malaysia he returned to UNT in 2001 where he taught for two years as Visiting Assistant Professor. His students and colleagues remember him for his quirky sense of humor, breadth of knowledge, intelligence, and passion for literature and the study of Philippine languages. Several of his former students and colleagues from UNT attended the memorial service which was held for him on January 17th at Faith Lutheran Church in his hometown of Stephenville, Texas.
