Hello. I have two questions about Bedouin Arabic. 1. I noticed in some sources (e.g. Ingham in Dialectologia Arabica 1995), that, in Bedouin Arabic, k and g(<classical q), can be palatalized. Could anyone tell me if this is a regular change and in what surroundings it occurs, and how is the palatalized g<qaf different from Classical jim. Also, how universal is this change among dialects? 2. I also wonder how different are ''Bedouin dialects'' of North Africa from those of the Peninsula. Especially, if they are more like Eastern dialects or more like western North African regarding a. merger of all short vowels, b. confusion of long and short, and c. typical North African vocabulary. I will be grateful for your responses. Tom Wisniewski tomwisnMail to author|Respond to list|Read more issues|LINGUIST home page|Top of issueyahoo.com
