University or Organization: Memorial University of Newfoundland Department: Linguistics Rank of Job: Assistant Professor Specialty Areas: Language Variation and Change Description: Tenure-Track Appointments: The position listed below will normally commence July 1, 2005, subject to budgetary approval; note that in some departments, more than one position is available. A completed earned doctorate is required for the appointee to receive the rank of Assistant Professor and to be in a tenure-track position. (If a successful candidate has not completed an earned doctorate, he/she shall be appointed to a regular term, non-renewable three-year appointment at the rank of Assistant professor. If the candidate completes all the requirements for the doctorate during the first 24 months of the term appointment, he/she shall begin a tenure-track appointment following completion of the requirements of the degree). Letters of application should be sent to the Head of the appropriate department, accompanied by a current curriculum vit�, a teaching dossier, the names and addresses of three persons who can supply a letter of reference, and such additional materials as may be specified below. Consideration of applications will begin October 18, 2004, and all applications should reach the Head no later than November 19, 2004. The successful applicant will be expected to teach at both undergraduate and graduate levels in sociolinguistics and language variation and should demonstrate an ability to teach at the advanced undergraduate level in one or more of the areas of historical/sociohistorical linguistics, language and gender, language contact, language and history and linguistic typology. Expertise in quantificational methodology is highly desirable, as is a willingness to engage intellectually with linguists in other sub-fields of linguistics, both informally and in collaborative research. Applicants must demonstrate a record of teaching excellence, as well as a strong research and publication record. The successful candidate will be expected to maintain an active research program in language variation and change, and supervise graduate students in this area; an interest in pursuing research on the dialects and languages of the region (English, French, local aboriginal languages, for which substantial archives and new laboratory facilities exist), would also be an asset.
