I am researching the role of choice in second language learning. More specifically, I am looking for any differences in language learning success (at both the individual and national levels) that arise when students are given a choice of which foreign language to learn as opposed to having a language mandated by the school system. This research entails notions within the psychology of choice like locus of control, intrinsic vs. extrinsic motivation, personal resistance, coercion, self-determination, decision-making, etc. as well as the ramifications of choice/mandate for language planning at the state level. If anyone has any data or knows of any sources related to these issues, I'd appreciate hearing from them off list. I will then post a summary of the responses to the list. We intend to provide our students with a multi-media pc-based language laboratory equipped with about 20 work stations and a master control console to enable both autonomous and monitored use. Any hardware/software recommendations and suggestions arising out of experience in operating such a system would be greatly appreciated. Thanks, Paul A.
