Message 1: An Appeal From New LINGUIST Advisor Jeff Allen

Date: 07-Apr-2005

Subject: An Appeal From New LINGUIST Advisor Jeff Allen

Fund Drive 2005 is now on! Visit http://linguistlist.org/donate.html to donate now!
Dear Listers,

Having recently joined the LinguistList (LL) advisory board, I would like to
provide a word about the LL fund drive in progress.

I have been a subscriber to LinguistList (LL) since 1994, but it really seems
more appropriate to refer to this as being a "member" of the LL community.

Like many LL community members, this membership started as a (post-)graduate
student in linguistics, and trying to fund those studies by teaching linguistics
and language courses (yes, with half the monthly salary going toward housing).
Over the years, my career continued on with several different jobs in the areas
of general linguistics, language teaching, technical writing, translation, and
human language technologies. And my LL membership participation naturally grew
in different ways:

1) first lurking through posts to find information about all kinds of questions
and issues
2) also posting informational messages to LL about the languages that I have
worked on
3) and posting my inquiries that many others have generously replied to,
followed by my summary messages
4) and of course looking for jobs (for me & friends) in the job ads section.

Even just the other day I was searching in the LL archives to track down a
specific posting that I recalled having appeared on the list back to the
mid-1990s. What a resource!!

And over the past few days, I realized that "several" of my jobs held over the
past 15 years (and a few other academic positions I was short-listed for as
well), were the "direct result" of applying to job ads on LL.

LL and its archives are certainly a resource for all of us members to distribute
and to find information on various languages and projects that we work on. LL
has also been a main channel over the past decade that has allowed literally
hundreds of institutions (academic, small business, multi-national corporate,
government, non-governmental, etc) to announce their recuitment needs. And of
course LL has been a key channel to allow thousands of linguists to feed
themselves and their families, partially or totally fund studies and field work,
etc.

What would all of us members do without LL?

I remember when Anthony Aristar announced last year that LL had obtained a Sun
server and was migrating everything to a large database. This might seem
uninteresting to many listers, but my daily work with the procurement and
deployment of large Sun unix servers for implementing industrial datawarehousing
systems let me see that LL was ramping up big-time for heavy-weight database
processing. Such equipment is very expensive and the human resource costs to
maintain and use it are also very costly. And LL, which is significantly
supported by a few academic institutions, only raises an operation budget of
50-60K US dollars through its funding-drive per year.

This amount is nothing compared to the multi-million dollar projects that I deal
with daily using the same type of equipment and experienced personnel.

Yet, that amount in business and industry is the yearly salary of single senior
programmer or certified database administrator, whereas LL operates with an
entire team of university-affiliated staff members to keep the list functioning
on a daily basis.

I also discovered recently that the web-access to LL is formally and regularly
tested on an entire range of operating systems. Having been a software test
manager in industry and a regular tester of commercial translation software for
several years, all I can say is that I am amazed. Do we members of the LL
community realize how well the LL is tested for us? And this compared to the
many software programs we purchase which are not thoroughly tested in as many
environments as LL is? Some LL testing is done by volunteers. What an excellent
example of the OpenSource approach in allowing the user community be the support
group.

There are a lot of new plans and efforts in progress to review and possibly
re-orient the funding structure of LL. Much thought and discussion takes place
on this. I am glad to be able to donate some of my time and experience in
financial sponsorship activities for these efforts. However, these actions are
going to take a few months to refine, put into place, measure, and improve with
the LL community volunteer based system.

In the meantime, LL still needs to function with a shoe-string budget.

So I now ask:

How many of us members have benefitted from the job ads and the
knowledge-intensive archived information in the past, once or several times?

And how many of us members are hoping to benefit from the upcoming job ads this
year, from the conference announcements, from the book reviews, from the
abstracts, from the archives, from the reviewed and edited discussion posts, etc?

How can we as members of the LL help out in this transition period to keep the
list functioning as many new plans are being reviewed to help LL cover its
financial operating costs with a heavy funding drive each year?

Regards,

Jeff Allen

Message 2: How to donate...

Date: 07-Apr-2005
From: linguist <linguistlinguistlist.org>
Subject: How to donate...

This Year the LINGUIST List hope to raise $48,867. This money will go to help
keep the List running, by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to
donate by check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

http://linguistlist.org/donate.html

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as
such can receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered
501(c) Non Profit organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These
donations can be offset against your federal and sometimes your state tax return
(U.S. tax payers only). For more information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact
your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any
gift you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your
contacting your human resources department and sending us a form that the EMU
Foundation fills in and returns to your employer. This is generally a simple
administrative procedure that doubles the value of your gift to LINGUIST,
without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment to check if your
company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
