The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we have no means of enforcing these standards. Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international employment page http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html. This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries. To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

The position is fractional (50%) and temporary, ending 30th September 2008. This position is suitable for candidates wishing to pursue a PhD in computational linguistics. The successful candidate will be a member of the research project 'Linguistic Description Structures as Data Types' of the collaborative research centre 441 on 'Linguistic Data Structures' (http://tcl.sfs.uni-tuebingen.de/a2/). An important part of the project is research on theoretical and practical aspects of querying linguistic treebanks. To make these valuable resources accessible to linguists, the development of powerful query systems with decent runtime properties is an important goal in computational linguistics. Duties: Development and implementation of a query system for treebanks based on tree automata. Profile: The successful candidate must have a four-year degree in computational linguistics or computer science. He or she should have practical experience in the design and implementation of larger software systems. Knowledge of linguistic treebanks and/or the theory of tree automata is a plus.
