Subject: New LINGUIST List Job Payment Policy
Dear Subscribers, As you know from recent discussions on the list, LINGUIST List has been having to rely more and more upon subscriber support to keep basic services running. This fund drive many subscribers suggested that one way to circumvent increasingly longer and more expensive fund drives is to require payment for all job announcements. Currently, only 42% of the announcements sent to the list are paid for -- in fact, if we had received payment for all of the 679 job postings that were sent in 2004, we could have foregone our 2005 fund drive! Therefore, LINGUIST List is instituting a new job payment policy: payment for posting job announcements will no longer be optional. As most of you know, payment for job announcements is customary in both paper and Internet publications. And LINGUIST offers employers more than other announcement venues, i.e., posting, within 48 hours, to an audience of over 21,000 linguists. So LINGUIST List job announcements will continue to be a bargain. LINGUIST List would also like to remind users that Support announcements (for research and studentship positions) are as always a free service of LINGUIST List. Questions about the new policy can be directed to the current jobs editor, Vanessa Manion (vanessa linguistlist.org). Submitters from countries with hard currency restrictions are encouraged to contact us when posting. Thank you, The LINGUIST List
