Subject: Sad passing of Dr Puleng Hanong, Wits
It is with the profoundest regret that we inform you that Dr Puleng Hanong, Senior Lecturer in Linguistics, University of the Witwatersrand (Johannesburg) passed away unexpectedly on 8 June 2005. Dr Hanong was a respected academic, devoted teacher and supervisor, and well-loved colleague. She did her academic training at the National University of Lesotho, the University of Edinburgh and the University of Liverpool where she completed a PhD in Applied Linguistics in 1997. She was a Rhodes Research Fellow at Oxford University before joining Wits in 2002. Dr Hanong was internationally recognized for her work in Critical Discourse Analysis. Her analyses focused on representations of Lesotho in the media, on courtroom discourse, and on gender relations within the legal system. There will be a memorial service in the Seminar Room of the South-West Engineering Building, Main Campus (East), University of the Witwatersrand, Jorrison Street or Empire Road, Johannesburg, South Africa, Wednesday, 22 June 2005, 1pm.
