Description:
A position for a PhD student (1/2 BAT IIa) will become available in the
English Linguistics section of the Department of Linguistics, Literary and
Media Studies at the University of Siegen (Germany). The position should be
filled by April 1, 2005 and is restricted to two years (an extension for a
third year is possible depending on funding).
The position will be in the project 'Compound stress in English', which is
funded by the Deutsche Forschungsgemeinschaft. The aim of the project is to
provide an explanation for the variable stress behavior of English
noun-noun constructions. To overcome the shortcomings of earlier studies,
three different types of data will be used: large amounts of naturally
occurring data from speech corpora, experiments with native speakers, and
computational modeling. The emphasis of the candidate's work will be on
psycholinguistic experiments that test different hypotheses about stress
assignment in noun-noun constructions with native speakers of American
English. The project is directed by Prof. Ingo Plag and involves colleagues
at the University of Siegen, the Max-Planck-Institute for Psycholinguistics
in Nijmegen and the University of Edinburgh.
The candidate should have a masters degree (or equivalent) in (English)
Linguistics and/or cognitive psychology. Candidates should also have a
strong background in morphology/syntax/semantics and preferably experience
in experimental linguistic work (including statistics).
