Intertheoretical approaches to complex verb constructions
Eleventh Rice Biennial Symposium
Date: March 16th-18th, 2006
Rice University's Linguistics Department will be hosting its Eleventh
Linguistic Symposium in March 2006. The aim of the symposium is to draw
together different theoretical approaches to the various types of complex
predicates found in the languages of the world. Emphasis is on drawing together
work on different language families and in different linguistic frameworks.
The current confirmed speakers are:

Martin Hilpert and Christian Koops (Rice)
Simin Karimi (U Arizona)
Andrew Pawley (Australian National University)

Eva Schultze-Berndt (Karl-Franzens-Universität Graz)

We would like to invite expressions of interest for additional papers directed
towards the symposium theme; we anticipate having space for approximately three
more speakers. Talks will be 45 minutes, with 15 minutes for questions. While
there will be no formal position paper, speakers will be asked to keep in mind
a general set of questions which will form the main issues for discussion at
the symposium. It is anticipated that a collection of papers from the volume
will be published following the symposium.

In this meeting, we would like to explore the marked differences in the forms of
address found in the Spanish speaking world, to compare the results and
methodologies used to describe the variation found, and to discuss the
possibilities of a joint study.
Las fórmulas de tratamiento son esenciales para la comunicación interpersonal.
Para dirigirse a otra persona, es (casi) inevitable escoger entre las diferentes
posibilidades de tratamiento que ofrece la lengua castellana, tales como tú,
usted, vos o en plural ustedes y vosotro/as, además de los honoríficos tan en
uso hoy como en el pasado. En el mundo hispanohablante hay marcadas diferencias
en el tratamiento según los orígenes geográficos y/o sociales de los hablantes.
Esta situación conduce a un sinfín de posibles malentendidos comunicativos. Las
fórmulas de tratamiento reflejan y al mismo tiempo influyen sobre las relaciones
sociales y jerarquías de los interactantes. En cierta manera, dan una imagen
fiel de la dinámica de las estructuras sociales y del cambio social reflejado en
ellas.
Últimamente se ha producido un importante avance en los estudios dedicados a las
fórmulas de tratamiento, también en conexión con los estudios sobre la cortesía
verbal. Sin embargo, la investigación en este campo nos parece demasiado
aislada: muchos investigadores no tienen contacto entre ellos, por lo que las
metodologías y los resultados muchas veces son difíciles de comparar.
En este contexto, el congreso se propone cuatro metas:
1. Estado de la cuestión a través de un panorama de la investigación sobre las
fórmulas de tratamiento según áreas lingüísticas, grupos sociales, cambios
diacrónicos, efectos diafásicos.
2. Las bases metódicas y metodológicas de los estudios.
3. Una bibliografía electrónica sobre estudios de las fórmulas de tratamiento;
4. La discusión de posibles proyectos de investigación.
Las contribuciones serán reunidas en un libro destinado para servir de punto de
referencia para la investigación.
