Meeting Description:

STLL 2005 is aimed at providing a setting for presentations of innovative
work, both theoretical and empirical, relative to the expression of time
and/or space within natural languages. The aim is to compare and contrast
the structure of spatiality and temporality both at the conceptual and at
the lexical levels, and try to do so from an interdisciplinary perspective.
The rationale behind the aim is that crosslinguistic and interdisciplinary
approaches provide the best grounds for testing existing and drawing new
hypotheses about language.

STLL 2005: 'Space and Time in Language and Literature'

STLL 2005 is aimed at providing a setting for presentations of innovative

and/or space within natural languages. The aim is to compare and contrast
the structure of spatiality and temporality both at the conceptual and at
the lexical levels, and try to do so from an interdisciplinary perspective.

approaches provide the best grounds for testing existing and drawing new
hypotheses about language.

Suggested topics include (but are not restricted to):

- Organization and expression of space in language
- Organization and expression of time in language
- Crosslinguistic analyses of space and/or time expression in language
and/or literature
- Space and/or time at the lexicon - syntax interface
- (Interaction between) spatiality and temporality, and structure of the
narrative
- Linearity, history and historicity in literature
- Cycle and myth in literature

Other relevant topics are welcome.

Papers will be 20 minutes in length, followed by a 10-minute discussion
period.

Anonymous one-page (300 words) abstracts of submissions (including
references) should be sent to mb250

gmx.net no later than February 10,
2005. Please, give your affiliation, postal address and phone/fax numbers
in the text of the message. A decision about the acceptance of papers will
be made by February 25, 2005.

A selection of papers will be published in a special issue of the journal
'Views and Voices', Zagar Publ.

The registration fee for the conference is 30 euros for the general public
(only attending), and 20 euros for those presenting a paper. The reduced
student fee is 10 euros. The fee covers refreshments during the conference
and a book of abstracts.

On the afternoon of the second day of the conference a trip to Istria will
be organised.

- The effect of spontaneous and induced neural activity on the developing
brain.
- Age-specific mechanisms and disorders of the developing brain.

Your oral or poster presentation is most welcome. The topic of your
presentation should refer to:

Activity dependent brain development.
Age-specific brain mechanisms.
Genetics of brain development.
Age-specific disorders.
Age-specific diagnostic procedures.
Age-related intervention.

Exciting progress has been made in the neurosciences of brain development
during recent years. Two hot topics of particular relevance to clinicians
deal with (1) the effect of spontaneous and induced neural activity on the
developing brain and (2) age-specific mechanisms and disorders of the
developing brain.
Leading experts from basic research will meet with clinicians to discuss
new findings and controversial problems concerning activity dependent and
independent brain development and their clinical consequences. The question
to what extent the development of certain neural functions is closely
age-locked while that of others is loosely age-related with a wide
inter-individual variation will be a prominent issue at this conference.
We bring together eminent scientists and clinicians from the various fields
of neurobiology and develop-mental neurology. Their contribution will be
relevant to clinicians in the field of child and developmental neurology,
neuroscientists, neuropsychologists, therapist, in short: to everyone
interested in child development and therapy.

Among the invited speakers are Dawna Armstrong (Houston), Giovanni Cioni
(Pisa), Ghislaine Dehaene-Lambertz (Orsay), Sir Gabriel Horn (Cambridge),
Walter Kaufmann (Baltimore), Lamberto Maffei (Pisa), Gerd Müller (Vienna),
Brian Neville (London), Ron Oppenheim (Winston-Salem), and Martin Staudt
(Tübingen).
