University or Organization: Northern Arizona University Department: College of Arts and Letters Job Rank: Dean Specialty Areas: Modern Languages Description: Northern Arizona University (NAU) invites nominations and applications for the position of Dean, College of Arts and Letters. We seek dynamic, creative and strategic leadership for the College, recently formed by joining the humanities departments with the fine and performing arts. The Dean's leadership will further the integration of these programs into a collaborative and energetic enterprise supporting the university's vision of student engagement with faculty and the community. The College of Arts and Letters is one of six academic colleges at Northern Arizona University, and has over 200 faculty and staff. The college provides instruction in core subjects through the departments of English; History; Humanities, Arts, and Religion; Modern Languages; Philosophy; Theatre; the School of Art; and the School of Music. The college also administers numerous interdisciplinary programs and centers devoted to research and outreach to the community (see our website, http://www.cal.nau.edu/). The college has over 1500 undergraduate and nearly 300 graduate majors, as well as a strong service mission in NAU's liberal studies and other curricular programs. We offer 46 undergraduate majors, master's degrees in 17 areas and two Ph.D. programs (History and Applied Linguistics). We have a strong teacher preparation degree, post-degree and master's programs across the disciplines. We are strongly committed to fostering scholarship and creative activity. We also participate widely in NAU's statewide delivery of instruction at both graduate and undergraduate levels. Reporting to the Provost, the Dean provides college leadership for instructional, budgetary, personnel, research and curricular matters and is responsible for university procedures and policies at the college level. The Dean is actively engaged in development and fundraising, and in furthering partnerships with community and arts organizations. The Dean is also responsible for the oversight and management of public performance and exhibition facilities. Qualifications Required We seek an innovative, visionary and creative academic leader of integrity. The successful candidate must have an earned doctorate or terminal degree in a discipline within the college's areas of responsibility, and an academic record commensurate with appointment as Full Professor with tenure. S/he will possess a minimum of three years of administrative experience and a successful academic/scholarly/creative activity record of accomplishment. The successful candidate will have demonstrated knowledge of and/or experience in many of the following areas: - Leadership and administrative responsibility for academic programs, faculty, staff, students, and facilities in one or more of the disciplines represented in the college - Demonstrated experience in strategic planning, budgeting and personnel management - Leadership, creativity, and ability in fund raising and advancement activities and in generating extramural funding for instructional, research, and public service programs - Experience with promoting diversity and a demonstrated commitment to working effectively in a multicultural environment - Demonstrable understanding of the complexities of representing the interests of both the arts and humanities - Commitment to the importance of recruiting, teaching, advising, and retaining students - Commitment to promoting and supporting the scholarly and creative activities in the various disciplines of the college - Experience with distance learning and/or the use of technology in teaching and program delivery - Demonstrated success in fostering a collegial, collaborative environment with students, staff, faculty, administrators, and the community.
