Subject: On-line Processing Studies on English Articles
Regarding query: http://www.linguistlist.org/issues/16/16-3167.html#1 I have requested for some references on on-line processing studies dealt with English articles and received helpful recommendations from several scholars such as Francis Bond, John A. Hawkins, Evan Kidd, and Charles T. Scott. I am grateful for their kind and valuable responses. Below is the edited list of the references I have received. ____________________________________________________________ From Francis Bond: fcbond gmail.com There is some discussion of articles in Emi Izumi's ''Automatic error detection in the Japanese learners' English spoken data'' <http://portal.acm.org/citation.cfm?id=1075178.1075202>. Book: ''Translating the Untranslatable A solution to the Problem of Generating English Determiners'' <http://cslipublications.stanford.edu/site/1575864606.html>, which summarizes most of the relevant literature. ____________________________________________________________ From John A. Hawkins: hawkins usc.edu See chapters 4.3 and 4.4 of 2004 Efficiency and Complexity in Grammars book, Oxford University Press (which deals with processing considerations in the evolution of definite articles in languages that have them). ___________________________________________________________ From Charles T. Scott: ctscott wisc.edu Quite a few years ago, Peter Master published an excellent article in the TESOL QUARTERLY on the syntax and semantics of the English articles, particularly the definite article. ___________________________________________________________ From Evan Kidd: Evan.J.Kidd manchester.ac.uk Spivey-Knowlton, M., & Sedivy, J. (1995). Resolving attachment ambiguities with multiple constraints. Cognition, 55, 227 - 267. I would still be very much appreciate if anyone could direct me to any studies particularly on on-line processing studies on English articles, for example studies using the Moving Window Reading task and so on.
