Jobs: Modern English Language: Full Prof, U of Leeds

Editor for this issue: Vanessa Manion <vanessalinguistlist.org>

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international employment page at http://linguistlist.org/jobnet.html. This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Subject: Modern English Language: Full Prof, University of Leeds, West Yorkshire, United Kingdom

University or Organization: University of Leeds
Department: School of English
Job Rank: Full Professor
Specialty Areas: Modern English Language

Description:

The School of English is seeking to appoint a Chair in Modern English
Language from 1st January 2006, or as soon as possible thereafter, to
succeed Professor Katie Wales.

The School is one of the largest and most successful departments of English
in the country, with a reputation both for international excellence in
research (5*A in RAE 2001) and for the high quality of its teaching
provision ('excellent' in TQA). In keeping with this departmental profile,
the person appointed will be a distinguished international scholar in the
field of Modern English Language. The new Professor will be expected to
make a major contribution to the further development of the School's
international profile by building upon the tradition of research excellence
in the subject area both within the School and through collaborative links
within the Faculty of Arts and in the University more widely. They will
also provide leadership in taught course provision: English Language
teaching has always formed a significant strand in the School's
undergraduate and taught postgraduate programmes, and a new Single Honours
BA programme has just been launched.

The salary, which is negotiable, will be within the professorial scale
(minimum £47,380 pa).

The University of Leeds is an Equal Opportunities employer. Women and
members of ethnic minorities are under-represented in the University in
posts at this level, and the University would therefore particularly
welcome applications from members of such groups, whilst, however,
affirming that the appointment will be made entirely on merit.
