Jobs: Language Development: Post Doc, University Utrecht

Editor for this issue: Vanessa Manion <>

The LINGUIST List strongly encourages employers to use non-discriminatory standards in hiring policy. In particular we urge that employers do not discriminate on the grounds of race, ethnicity, nationality, age, religion, gender, or sexual orientation. However, we have no means of enforcing these standards.

Job seekers should pay special attention to language in ads regarding employment requirements and are encouraged to consult our international employment page at This page has been set up so that people can report on the employment standards of various countries.

Message 1: Language Development: Post Doc, University Utrecht, Netherlands

From: Corrie van Os <>
Subject: Language Development: Post Doc, University Utrecht, Netherlands

University or Organization: Universiteit Utrecht
Department: UiL-OTS
Job Rank: Post Doc
Specialty Areas: Language Development

The five-year research programme, awarded to René Kager by the The
Netherlands Organisation for Scientific Research (NWO), addresses the
acquisition of phonotactic knowledge in a second language, and its role in
speech segmentation and lexical acquisition. The hypothesis is that the
phonotactic knowledge which supports speech segmentation is active at a
processing level outside the mental lexicon. The programme aims at tracking
the phonotactic knowledge of Dutch as a second language for learners with
different native language backgrounds. Phonotactic knowledge will be
computationally modelled by sets of hierarchically ranked constraints.
Research involves perception experiments, experiments on the learning of
natural and artificial languages, analyses of Dutch spoken language
corpora, and computational modelling. The programme comprises four projects,
three for PhD students who are required to be native speakers of Dutch.

There is also a vacancy for a post-doc position:
PROJECT I: (starting date 1-9-2005): a 3-year postdoc project addressing
the effects of phonotactic knowledge on speech segmentation in a second
language, in relation to the native phonotactic system and size of the L2
lexicon. Experimental methods include word spotting, lexical decision,
eye-tracking, and distributional learning. Another important aim is the
development and advancement of experimental techniques to be used in the
other projects. (position number 68503)

The postdoc researcher will be involved in the programme coordination,
including the collection, analysis, and interpretation of research data.
The project should result in a series of papers in international journals,
in collaboration with the project supervisor.

We are looking for an ambitious postdoc researcher, with enthousiasm for
linguistic issues, who is prepared to collaborate with other researchers in
a team. Applicants should hold a doctoral degree (completed by 1 September
2005), as well as demonstrated capacities as an independent researcher, in
the form of publications. The successful candidate has a background in an
experimental linguistic discipline, preferably psycholinguistics, speech
perception, language development, or experimental phonology. Some knowledge
of Dutch is desirable, but not required.

How to apply?
Applications (by regular mail or by e-mail) should include a curriculum
vitae and the names and addresses of two referees. (References letters are
preferably included), two publications plus PhD dissertation. E-mail
applications should be sent in pdf or doc format to, and
should specify your name and vacancy number in the message as well as in
the topic, include a list of attachments in the message, and specify the
applicant's name in every attachment.
