I think that charging for the use of LinguistList is a perfectly
reasonable solution. People who use this extremely valuable service,
myself included, should be willing to pay a modest fee for it. If you
divide the amount of money needed by the number of users, I think the
amount per user would be very small indeed. ... You should, of course,
continue to charge publishing houses for announcing their books.

Linguistlist is a public good, so ought to receive state funding, and ought not
to rely on contributions from linguists' salaries, whose purpose is to pay for
linguists' labour, not to pay for public goods like libraries or Linguistlist.

Ideally, therefore, the running of Linguistlist would be handed over to
whoever is able to raise state funding for it.

As a fallback solution, Linguislist could be split into (1) free low-maintenance
email lists, and (2) a high-mainenance website available by subscription to
University libraries.

I would definitely be against merging Linguist with other
organizations for the sake of eliminating fund drives.

One of the best things about Linguist is its independence. Inevitably,
if it gets merged with another organization, that independence will be
compromised. It won't happen overnight, but I would expect to see a
gradual erosion as more and more of the workings of Linguist get
"aligned" with the practices of the parent organization(s).

Though the analogy to NPR (or PBS) fund drives has been made, I think
it is a poor one. On NPR you have little choice but to listen to the
fund drive messages since they are frequently of indefinite duration,
inserted between things that you actually want to listen to. With
Linguist, if the messages really annoy you, you can always turn on
email filters that will block the messages.
