Message 1: Editor Megan Zdrojkowski on Getting to Know LINGUIST
Date: 10-Apr-2006
From: linguist <linguistlinguistlist.org>
Subject: Editor Megan Zdrojkowski on Getting to Know LINGUIST

Dear LINGUIST Subscribers,

This is my second year here at LINGUIST, which I guess means that I can now be
considered a seasoned vet! However, despite the countless hours that I have put in
corresponding with publishers, posting Book and TOC announcements, replying to
subscribers, programming new facilities, maintaining code, and doing the dozens of
other tasks LINGUIST editors perform on a daily basis (plus co-coordinating Fund
Drive!), I still feel like I'm just beginning to understand all the work that goes
into running and maintaining a behemoth site like LINGUIST.

I'm pretty sure that most of the crew feels this way, no matter how long they've been
here or how many different parts of the site they've had the chance to work
on--LINGUIST is just so huge! I doubt Helen and Tony had even the vaguest idea of
what they were getting themselves into when they started LINGUIST 17 years ago. Who
would have guessed that LINGUIST would grow to over 22,000 subscribers in 108
different countries? Who knew that LINGUIST would become the top place linguists turn
to for finding job announcements or learning about the latest linguistics
conferences, books, journals, and even blogs? (For that matter, who knew that blogs
would become so huge?) Who could have predicted that it would eventually take 18
dedicated graduate students just to keep the site up and running? And who would have
thought that the continued existence of LINGUIST would come to depend on subscriber
donations during Fund Drive?

Unfortunately, I guess that last part wasn't *that* hard to predict; in the academic
world, at least in the United States, where LINGUIST is based, it is very difficult
to find adequate funding, no matter how important the project is. This is why we
must call on our subscribers for help each year during Fund Drive. If you feel that
LINGUIST plays an important role in your life, please consider making a donation
today. All your donations go directly to funding the graduate students (like me!) who
work so hard to keep LINGUIST up and running.

What makes working at LINGUIST so great is not just being a part of our incredibly
diverse, funny, and friendly crew--it's the fact that I get to learn something new
every single day. I honestly believe that I've learned more about linguistics from
working at LINGUIST than from any single class in my M.A. program. After all, as part
of the Publications Team, I've had to categorize literally hundreds of books and TOCs
by the relevant subfields and languages, which means I've essentially had a
crash-course in every subfield of linguistics! Also, by representing LINGUIST at
conferences like E-MELD and LSA, I've been able to attend dozens of presentations by
prominent linguists from around the world, and I've even had the chance to meet and
interact with some of the top names in linguistics.

In closing, I'm very grateful for the opportunity to be a part of LINGUIST, and I'd
like to send a warm thank you to all of you who have already donated. Your
contributions not only ensure that LINGUIST will be able to continue for another
year--they also provide funding for the education of future linguists. For those of
you who haven't donated, please consider doing so today. Remember that every last
dollar (euro, peso, pound, yen, etc..) helps!

Thank you VERY much for your support,

Megan Zdrojkowski
Fund Drive Co-coordinator
Publications Manager

This Year the LINGUIST List hopes to raise $52,932. This money will go to help keep the
List running by supporting all of our Student Editors for the coming year.

See below for donation instructions, and don't forget to check out our Fund Drive 2006
LINGUIST List Cruise for some Fund Drive fun!

There are many ways to donate to LINGUIST!

You can donate right now using our secure credit card form.

Alternatively you can also pledge right now and pay later.

For all information on donating and pledging, including information on how to donate by
check, money order, or wire transfer, please visit:

The LINGUIST List is under the umbrella of Eastern Michigan University and as such can
receive donations through the EMU Foundation, which is a registered 501(c) Non Profit
organization. Our Federal Tax number is 38-6005986. These donations can be offset against
your federal and sometimes your state tax return (U.S. tax payers only). For more
information visit the IRS Web-Site, or contact your financial advisor.

Many companies also offer a gift matching program, such that they will match any gift
you make to a non-profit organization. Normally this entails your contacting your human
resources department and sending us a form that the EMU Foundation fills in and returns
to your employer. This is generally a simple administrative procedure that doubles the
value of your gift to LINGUIST, without costing you an extra penny. Please take a moment
to check if your company operates such a program.

Thank you very much for your support of LINGUIST!
