We'd like to remind readers that the responses to queries are usually best posted to the individual asking the question. That individual is then strongly encouraged to post a summary to the list. This policy was instituted to help control the huge volume of mail on LINGUIST; so we would appreciate your cooperating with it whenever it seems appropriate. In addition to posting a summary, we'd like to remind people that it is usually a good idea to personally thank those individuals who have taken the trouble to respond to the query. To post to LINGUIST, use our convenient web form at http://linguistlist.org/LL/posttolinguist.html.

Message 1: Call for Volunteers-Multiword Units Experiment

From: Helene Stengers <helene.stengers vub.ac.be>
Subject: Call for Volunteers-Multiword Units Experiment
Dear colleagues and/or readers of this message, I am a research assistant at the Vrije Universiteit Brussel, where I am preparing my PhD on English and Spanish phraseology (multiword units) in Foreign Language Teaching.
I am making headway with my research project, but I now need the help of English or Spanish native speakers and/or EFL or SFL (ELE) teachers. I have ''built'' ''matched'' (in terms of speakers and topic) audio corpora in both English and Spanish. For each language, the corpus currently consists of one hour of audio material consisting of interview fragments on all kinds of topics (taken mainly from BBC Radio 4, and BBCMundo and Cadena Ser). I am looking for people to simply listen to the interviews and write down every 'multiword unit' they hear along the way (I would of course explain to you what I mean exactly by multiword unit). Any help would be greatly appreciated. Kind regards, Helene Stengers For any question or for more information, please contact me at helene.stengers vub.ac.be

Message 2: Language and Technology Questionnaire

Date: 22-Apr-2006
From: Terence Fitzgerald <tfitzger pratt.edu>
Subject: Language and Technology Questionnaire
I am Terence Fitzgerald, a graduate student in Pratt Institute’s School of Information and Library Science. My academic work focuses on human-computer interaction, particularly the ways in which, as Marshall McLuhan wrote, “We shape our tools and thereafter our tools shape us.” Currently, I am examining technology’s effects on people’s relationship with language. Specifically, I question whether technology is transforming that relationship in ways never seen before—or simply causing them to revert to existing behaviors. As part of my work I have constructed a brief questionaire for lexicographers and linguists. The responses I compile will be used to inform future projects. If you are willing to answer the questionnaire, please reply to me off list at tfitzger pratt.edu. Sincerely, Terence
